i-SUSTAIN presents a Convening of Washington state and Scandinavian Climate and Energy Professionals 11-14 April 2016
Invitation-only events in multiple cities in Washington State including presentations, meetings, and site visits and one public event in both Seattle and Olympia.
Since 2003, i-SUSTAIN has brought over 400 politicians, policy makers, and business leaders from Washington state and Oregon to Denmark and Sweden for them to experience, among other things, how energy and climate policy in these countries are part of a larger set of policies, including land use, transportation, solid waste management, architecture, economic development, forest management, and environmental protection. The purpose of this convening is to build upon the knowledge gained through our many delegations by bringing together the business, public and NGO sector leaders from Washington State and Scandinavia, which are two of the leading regions in the world, to share ideas, build relationships and facilitate potential areas of collaboration.
Recently, in September 2015, i-SUSTAIN brought a delegation of Washington state legislators and senior administrators from Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), utilities and Gov. Inslee’s office to Denmark and Sweden. The programme included meetings and site visits about the economic impacts in both countries of both carbon taxes and cap and trade, sustainable transport plans, new neighborhood development using smart grids, building energy policies, the role of utilities in managing distributed energy, waste to energy plants, biomass, community wind and solar power. There were also breakout tours to 100% renewable energy self-sufficient Samsø Island and to Växjo, Sweden, to learn about the use of forest residue for bioenergy.
Climate Neutral 2050: Convening between Washington state and Scandinavia
Climate and Energy Convening
11-14 April 2016
Seattle and Olympia, WA
The momentum from this successful delegation is continuing via several i-SUSTAIN programmes in 2016. The delegation participants have advocated that we organize a convening 11-14 April 2016 in Washington state that includes Danish, Swedish and Washington state participants to continue to share the knowledge between the two regions as well as potentially contribute to future collaborations between public and private entities within Washington state and their counterparts within Denmark and Sweden.
Issues and solutions covered at the Convening will include:
- Green economic growth while reducing carbon emissions
- Carbon policy (Danish and WA models)
- Smart energy grids, upgrading to district energy
- Compressed laminated timber construction in tall structures
- Fossil-fuel free communities
- Biomass and waste-to-energy systems
- Climate change strategies
- Mobile transport and electric vehicles
- Leading energy technology (batteries, heat pumps, interconnections)
We are reaching out to a select group of organizations who believe that this convening will help them further their own goals and aspirations with regard to climate and energy. Almost all events are invitation only with the exception of one public event in Seattle and one in Olympia.
